Life never comes with a guide but we often impose so many dos and don'ts on ourselves that we totally kill the unpredictability in our lives. In our 20s, we pressurise ourselves to be prettier, to be richer, to be smarter. Why? Because everyone else is doing the same.
Cut yourself some slack, girls. You're not the girl who got 'rejected' by a guy or the girl who still can't apply proper nail paint. Your failures say nothing about you. If you're a woman in 20s who still sulks because of the guy who got away or the job you couldn't get because you were not 'skilled enough', here are a few promises that you really need to make to yourself.
Read on!
1. 'I will not depend on anyone and everyone for the small joys of life.'
Unsplash
You don't need any WhatsApp group or gang of friends to catch that film no one else wanted to watch. Realise that you are self-sufficient and good enough to ensure that you avail all the small joys of life.
2. 'Comparing is okay, only if I'm buying mangoes'
Unsplash
There will always be someone who will be prettier than you or smarter than you. STOP. DRAWING. COMPARISONS. It doesn't change shit.
3. 'Not everyone will understand me and I am perfectly okay with that.'
Unsplash
Stop sulking because someone called you 'sensitive' or 'docile'. People are not entitled to understand you. If they don't understand you or your intentions, learn to forgive them. Even if your friend doesn't get you or your intentions, let it be.
4. 'My life is not a set of 'set it right' projects'
Unsplash
Your life is not a reality show. Chill and calm the fu** down. Things might turn upside down, relationships might fail and it is completely okay. Stop hyperventilating.
5. 'I will embrace my inner child without feeling embarrassed about it!'
Unsplash
Craving an ice-cream at 1 AM is not a childish wish. Crying for something or someone isn't immature. Cut some slack and give yourself these small privileges. No matter how 'kiddish' the world calls you, start doing everything that makes you happy without fearing what the world will think'.
6. 'Travelling solo doesn't define me, travelling does.'
Unsplash
Making and getting a plan to materialise with a bunch of friends is probably the most difficult thing in the world. If you always wanted to try cliff jumping or river-rafting, go solo. Ten years down the line you'll realise that your solo trip was perhaps one of the best teachers of your life. Travel, go wild, go camping, do everything that crazy heart wants you to.
7. 'No matter when-who-why, if someone is treating me like shit, I will cut the chord.'
Unsplash
Stop being nice to people who don't get you or your affection for them. Sometimes even when you've set your expectations low, they might disappoint you. Cut yourself off. It may hurt a little but you don't need anyone who makes you feel like you're a difficult person to handle.
8. 'I will not try to please everyone in my life.'
You need to realise that you're a normal human being and not a bubble wrap. You will unintentionally end up offending and hurting people and that does not mean that you go on a 'please everyone' spree. Those who really want to stay in your life will always find reasons. Those who don't want to will find enough excuses.
9. 'I am not my mistakes.'
Unsplash
Make mistakes. Fall down. Shatter into pieces. Learn your lessons well and don't judge yourself through the periscope of your mistakes. You are not your mistakes, your mistakes were a part of you.
10. 'I will be kinder to the world, even if the world isn't.'
Unsplash
People may be mean to you at the time when you really need them. Let it be. Don't hurt others because you are hurt. Be kind. Be humble. Be grateful for small things people do for you. Adding some additional 'thank yous' won't hurt your ego or self pride, get it?
11. 'I will be impulsive and unreasonable and be okay with it.'
Unsplash
Being emotionally impulsive is completely fine. Send risky texts, send those random 'I miss you' texts, try Tinder, do everything that you were fearing. Satisfy your heart and be unapologetically you.
You're still a masterpiece in the making and even when you can't carry off heels for three hours straight, you're still the most gorgeous woman in the world.
