Black Box Of General Bipin Rawat's Crashed Chopper Recovered: 10 Points

New Delhi: 

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh will make a statement in both houses of Parliament on the chopper crash that killed 13 people, including Chief Of Defence Staff General Bipin Rawat. The black box of the chopper has been recovered.

Here is a 10-point summary of the helicopter crash:
  1. The helicopter crashed shortly after it took off from the Air Force base in Sulur at 11.45 am, Coimbatore. It was on its way to Wellington in Nilgiri Hills where General Rawat was to address a gathering at the Defence Services Staff College. Air Chief Marshal VR Chaudhary, Air Force Chief visited the crash site this morning.
  2. The Mi-17 V5 helicopter was making its descent and would have landed in 10 more minutes when it came down, barely 10 km from a road. The Air Force has now ordered an Inquiry into what happened.
  3. The only survivor of the mishap is Air Force Group Captain Varun Singh, who is being treated for severe burns. Group Captain Singh had gone to Sulur from Wellington to receive General Rawat.
  4. Videos from the crash site showed wreckage scattered on a hillside and rescuers struggling through smoke and fire to locate bodies. Charred bodies were pulled out from under mangled metal and fallen trees.
  5. Shortly after the incident, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, briefed by the Defence Minister, called a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security at his residence.
  6. Tributes have poured in for the General from across the country and abroad. The Prime Minister described him as an "outstanding soldier" and a "true patriot". The Defence Minister called it an "irreparable loss" to the country and the forces.
  7. The funeral of General Rawat and his wife will take place tomorrow. Their bodies are expected to reach Delhi by a military plane today evening.
  8. General Rawat, 63, took charge as India's first Chief of Defence Staff in January 2020. The position was created to integrate Army, Navy and the Air Force. A former Army Chief, he was also appointed the head of the newly-created Department of Military Affairs.
  9. The general joined the army as a second lieutenant in 1978 and had four decades of service behind him, having commanded forces in Jammu and Kashmir and along the Line of Actual Control bordering China.
  10. The other defence personnel killed in the crash included Brigadier L S Lidder, Lieutenant Colonel Harjinder Singh, Wing Commander PS Chauhan, Squadron Leader K Singh, JWO Das, JWO Pradeep A, Havildar Satpal, Naik Gursewak Singh, Naik Jitender Kumar, Lance Naik Vivek Kumar and Lance Naik Sai Teja.

Coronavirus Live Updates: 6,822 Fresh Covid Cases In India, Its Lowest In 558 Days

New Delhi:

India recorded a daily spike of 6,822 Covid cases on Tuesday, taking the total active caseload of cases to 95,014 -- the lowest in 554 days. India's active cases account for less than 1% of total cases and are currently at 0.27% which is the lowest since March 2020.

The overall recovery rate currently stands at 98.36 per cent, highest since March 2020 as India logged 10,004 recoveries in the past 24 hours taking the total number of recoveries to 3.40.79.612.

India's Omicron tally is steadily rising with fresh cases of the worrisome variant in Maharashtra, Rajasthan and Delhi. Seven in Maharashtra, nine in Jaipur and a man in Delhi were found positive with the variant, taking the total count in the country to 21.

A total of 128.76 crore vaccine doses have been administered till now in India under Nationwide Vaccination Drive. The daily positivity was recorded at 0.94 per cent while the weekly positivity rate was 0.78 per cent.
