Theme of the Sunday

To Inherit Eternal Life. Our love of God, we learn from today’s gospel, will be assessed on our attitude towards people. A true religion is a religion of love, not one of mere words. The Samaritan was capable of sharing in God's compassion for all people. The first reading tells us that the commandments are not imposed from outside but spring from our hearts. The second reading is in line with this theme. Jesus holds the first place in love for his brethren. He was the first authentic “Samaritan.”

A reading from the Book of Deuteronomy (Deuteronomy 30: 10-14)

“The word is very near you so that you can do it.”

Moses spoke to the people, saying, “You shall obey the voice of the Lord your God, and keep his commandments and his statutes which are written in this book of the law, and turn to the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul. “For this commandment which I command you this day is not too hard for you, neither is it far off. It is not in heaven, that you should say, ‘Who will go up for us to heaven, and bring it to us, that we may hear it and do it?’ Neither is it beyond the sea, that you should say, ‘Who will go over the sea for us, and bring it to us, that we may hear it and do it?' But the word is very near you; it is in your mouth and in your heart, so that you can do it.”

“All things were created through him and in him.”

Christ Jesus is the image of the invisible God, the first-born of all creation; for in him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or authorities — all things were created through him and for him. He is before all things, and in him all things hold together. He is the head of the body, the Church; he is the beginning, the first-born from the dead, that in everything he might be pre-eminent. For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of his cross.

“Who is my neighbour?”

At that time: Behold, a lawyer stood up to put Jesus to the test, saying, “Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?” He said to him, “What is written in the law? What do you read there?” And he answered, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind; and your neighbour as yourself.” And he said to him, “You have answered right; do this, and you will live.” But he, desiring to justify himself, said to Jesus, “And who is my neighbour?” Jesus replied, “A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and he fell among robbers, who stripped him and beat him, and departed, leaving him half dead. Now by chance a priest was going down that road; and when he saw him he passed by on the other side. So likewise a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. But a Samaritan, as he journeyed, came to where he was; and when he saw him, he had compassion, and went to him and bound up his wounds, pouring on oil and wine; then he set him on his own beast and brought him to an inn, and took care of him. And the next day he took out two denarii and gave them to the innkeeper, saying, ‘Take care of him; and whatever more you spend, I will repay you when I come back.’ Which of these three, do you think, proved neighbour to the man who fell among the robbers?” He said, “The one who showed mercy on him.” And Jesus said to him, “Go and do likewise.”

*Today’s Reflection*

The path to inherit eternal life is not so far from us as to need someone to bring it near. It is visible in Jesus and expressed in his teaching: ‘Love your neighbour as yourself.’ This path to eternal life calls us to stretch beyond our comfort zone to the very unfamiliar and the strange. It is a human inclination in us to love our own and despise what we consider as the other. Your neighbour is that person with whom you may not necessarily share the same faith. He is that person with whom you may not necessarily share the same race, ideology, or opinions. In a world that is becoming more exclusive and boundary-bound, true worshippers of God are invited to break those boundaries and reach out to the other.

God will visit you, and bring you up out of this land

 A reading from the Book of Genesis (Genesis 49:29-33; 50: 15-26a)

“God will visit you, and bring you up out of this land.”

In those days: Jacob charged his sons, and said to them, “I am to be gathered to my people; bury me with my fathers in the cave that is in the field of Ephron the Hittite, in the cave that is in the field at Machpelah, to the east of Mamre, in the land of Canaan, which Abraham bought with the field from Ephron the Hittite to possess as a burying place. There they buried Abraham and Sarah his wife; there they buried Isaac and Rebekah his wife; and there I buried Leah — the field and the cave that is in it were purchased from the Hittites.” When Jacob finished charging his sons, he drew up his feet into the bed, and breathed his last, and was gathered to his people. When Joseph’s brothers saw that their father was dead, they said, “It may be that Joseph will hate us and pay us back for all the evil which we did to him.” So they sent a message to Joseph, saying, “Your father gave this command before he died, ‘Say to Joseph, Forgive, I pray you, the transgression of your brothers and their sin, because they did evil to you.’ And now, we beg you, forgive the transgression of the servants of the God of your father.” Joseph wept when they spoke to him. His brothers also came and fell down before him, and said, “Behold, we are your servants.” But Joseph said to them, “Fear not, for am I in the place of God? As for you, you meant evil against me; but God meant it for good, to bring it about that many people should be kept alive, as they are today. So do not fear; I will provide for you and your little ones.” Then he reassured them and comforted them. So Joseph dwelt in Egypt, he and his father’s house; and Joseph lived a hundred and ten years. And Joseph saw Ephraim’s children of the third generation; the children also of Machir the son of Manasseh were born upon Joseph’s knees. And Joseph said to his brothers, “I am about to die; but God will visit you, and bring you up out of this land to the land which he swore to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob.” Then Joseph took an oath of the sons of Israel, saying, “God will visit you, and you shall carry up my bones from here.” So Joseph died, being a hundred and ten years old.

A reading from the holy Gospel according to Matthew (Matthew 10:24-33)

“Do not fear those who kill the body.”

At that time: Jesus said to his apostles, “A disciple is not above his teacher, nor a servant above his master; it is enough for the disciple to be like his teacher, and the servant like his master. If they have called the master of the house Beelzebul, how much more will they malign those of his household. So have no fear of them; for nothing is covered that will not be revealed, or hidden that will not be known. What I tell you in the dark, utter in the light; and what you hear whispered, proclaim upon the housetops. And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul; rather fear him who can destroy both soul and body in hell. Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? And not one of them will fall to the ground without your Father’s will. But even the hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not, therefore; you are of more value than many sparrows. So every one who acknowledges me before men, I also will acknowledge before my Father who is in heaven; but whoever denies me before men, I also will deny before my Father who is in heaven.

*Today’s Reflection*

There will always be something to be afraid of in life. What are you afraid of? Courage does not annihilate fear. It goes ahead and does the needful despite fear. Perhaps, because of fear, someone is about to be discouraged from achieving a feat today. It is interesting to know that not all that is faced in life can be changed. But nothing can be changed until it is faced. Jesus did not hide this fact from his disciples. There are forces, no doubt, to cause us to fear in our spiritual warfare, but Christ has conquered. Therefore, feel the fear, go ahead, face life, and do what needs to be done.

*நிகழ்வு*

ஒரு சமயம் திருத்தந்தை பதினைந்தாம் பெனடிக்ட்  வத்திகானில் உள்ள தனது இல்லத்தின் பால்கனியிலிருந்து மக்கட்கு ஆசி வழங்கிக்கொண்டிருந்தார். அப்பொழுது அவரைக் கொல்வதற்காக மக்களோடு மக்களாக வந்திருந்த கயவன் ஒருவன் தன்னுடைய கையில் வைத்திருந்த துப்பாக்கியால் திருத்தந்தை அவர்களைக் குறிபார்த்துச் சுடத் தொடங்கினான். ஆனால், அவன் வைத்த குறி கொஞ்சம் பிசகிவிட திருத்தந்தை எப்படியோ அதிலிருந்து தப்பித்தார்.

இதைத் தொடர்ந்து திருத்தந்தையைக் காவல் காத்துக்கொண்டிருந்த காவலாளிகள், திருத்தந்தையைச் சுடமுயன்ற அந்தக் கயவனை ஓடிச்சென்று பிடித்தார்கள். பின்னர் அவனைச் சிறையில் அடைத்துக் காவல்காத்து வந்தார்கள். இரண்டு மூன்று நாட்கள் கழித்து திருத்தந்தை அவர்கள் தன்னைக் கொல்ல முயன்றவனைப் பார்க்கச் சென்றார். அவனோ திருத்தந்தையின் காலில் விழுந்து, தன்னை மனதார மன்னிக்குமாறு கேட்டான். திருத்தந்தையும் அவனை மனதார மன்னித்தார்.

பின்னர் அவர் அவனிடம் சிரித்துக்கொண்டே, “நீ நான் இறையாசி வழங்கிய கூட்டத்தில் ஒருவனாக இருந்ததால்தான் உன்னால் என்னைக் குறிபார்த்துச் சுட முடியவில்லை... நான் வழங்கிய இறையாசி உன்னைச் சரியாகக் குறிபார்க்க விடாமல் செய்திருக்கும். அடுத்தமுறை நீ என்னைச் சுட நினைத்தால், தனியாக இருந்துகொண்டு என்னைச் சுட முயற்சி செய். அப்பொழுது உன்னால் என்னைச் சரியாகக் குறிவைத்துச் சுட முடியும்” என்றார். தொடர்ந்து அவர் அவனிடம், “நீ என்னைச் சுடமுயன்ற செய்தி உன் வீட்டில் இருக்கின்ற எல்லார்க்கும் எப்படியும் தெரிந்திருக்கும். அவர்கள் அதை நினைத்து மிகவும் வருந்திக்கொண்டிருப்பார்கள். அதனால் நீ உடனடியாக வீட்டிற்குச் சென்று, ‘திருத்தந்தை என்னை மனதார மன்னித்துவிட்டார்’ எனச் சொல்” என்று சொல்லி அவனை அனுப்பி வைத்தார். அவனும் தன்னுடைய வீட்டிற்குச் சென்று, திருத்தந்தை தன்னிடம் கூறியவற்றை அவர்களிடம் எடுத்துச் சொல்லி, அவர்களுடைய வருத்தத்தைப் போக்கினான். 

தன்னைக் கொள்ள முயன்றவனையும் திருத்தந்தை மனதார மன்னித்த இச்செய்தி அந்நாட்களில் பத்திரிகைகளில் மிகவும் பரபரப்பாகப் பேசப்பட்டது. 

மேலே சொல்லப்பட்ட நிகழ்வில் திருத்தந்தை எப்படி தன்னைக் கொல்லமுயன்றவனை மனதார மன்னித்தாரோ அப்படியே இன்றைய முதல் வாசகத்தில் தன்னைக் கொல்ல முயன்ற தன் சகோதரர்களை யோசேப்பு மனதார மன்னிக்கின்றார். அது குறித்து இப்பொழுது சிந்தித்துப் பார்த்து நிறைவுசெய்வோம். 

*குற்றப்பழியோடு இருந்தவர்களை மனதார மன்னித்த யோசேப்பு*

முதல் வாசகத்தில், யாக்கோபு இறந்ததும் அவருடைய பத்துப் புதல்வர்களும், தாங்கள் யோசேப்புக்கு எதிராகத் தவறு செய்ததற்கு அவன் தங்களைப் பழி வாங்குவான் என்று எண்ணத் தொடங்குகின்றார்கள். அது மட்டுமல்லாமல், யாக்கோபு இறப்பதற்கு முன்னம், தாங்கள் செய்த தவறுகளை எல்லாம் யோசேப்பு மன்னிக்கவேண்டும் என்றும் அவர் அவனிடம் கூறச் சொன்னதாகச் சொல்கின்றார்கள். இதைக் கேட்டு யோசேப்பு கண்ணீர் விட்டு அழுகின்றார்.

யோசேப்பு தன் சகோதரர்கள் செய்த குற்றத்தை ஏற்கனவே மன்னித்திருந்தார் (தொநூ 45: 5). அப்படியிருந்தும் அவர்கள் அதை நம்பமால், தன் சகோதரன் தங்களை முழுமையாக மன்னிக்கவில்லை என்ற குற்றவுணர்வோடே இருக்கின்றார்கள். அதனால்தான் அவர்கள் தங்களுடைய தந்தையின் இறப்பிற்குப் பின் யோசேப்பு தங்களைப் பழிவாங்குவார் என்று நினைக்கின்றார்கள். இந்நிலையில்தான் யோசேப்பு அவர்களை மனதார மன்னித்து, அவர்களை அவர்களுடைய குற்றவுணர்விலிருந்து வெளியே வரச் செய்கின்றார்.

*தீமையில் நன்மை இருப்பதாக எடுத்துச் சொன்ன யோசேப்பு*

யோசேப்பை அவர்களுடைய சகோதரர்கள் பத்துப் பேரும் சேர்ந்து கொல்ல முயன்றார்கள். ஆனால், அவர்களுள் ஒருவன், அவனைக் கொல்லவேண்டும்... விற்றுவிடுவோம் என்று சொல்ல, அதுபோன்றே செய்தார்கள். இது ஒருபுறத்தில் மிகப்பெரிய குற்றமாக இருந்தாலும், இதன்மூலம் கடவுள் யோசேப்பை எகிப்து நாட்டின் ஆளுநராக உயர்த்தி, பஞ்சக் காலத்தில் அவர்கட்கு உணவிடுமாறு செய்கின்றார். இதைத்தான் இன்றைய முதல் வாசகத்தில் யோசேப்பு தன் சகோதரர்களிடம், “நீங்கள் எனக்குத் தீமை செய்ய நினைத்தீர்கள். ஆனால், கடவுள் அதை இன்று நடப்பது போல், திரளான மக்களை உயிரோடு காக்கும்பொருட்டு நன்மையாக மாற்றிவிட்டார்” என்று கூறுகின்றார். 

ஆகையால், நம்முடைய வாழ்க்கையில் நடக்கின்ற சில எதிர்பாராத சம்பவங்களை நினைத்துக் குழம்பிக் கொண்டிருக்காமல், அதைத் இறைத்திருவுளமென ஏற்று, அவருடைய திருவுளத்திற்குப் பணிந்து நடக்கக் கற்றுக்கொள்வோம். 

*சிந்தனை*

‘ஆண்டவர் உங்களை மன்னித்தது போல நீங்களும் மன்னிக்கவேண்டும்’ (கொலோ 3:13) என்பார் பவுல். ஆகையால், யோசேப்பு தன் சகோதரர்களை மன்னித்து போல, ஆண்டவர் நம்மை மன்னித்தது போல், நாமும் ஒருவர் மற்றவரை மன்னிப்போம். அதன்வழியாக இறையருளை நிறைவாகப் பெறுவோம்.
