Finance Ministry clears way for individual, institutional contributions to NDRF

  • The Finance Ministry has cleared the way for individual and institutional contributions to the National Disaster Response Fund (NDRF), nearly 15 years after it was set up, a letter shared by the ministry with an RTI activist said.
  • The letter from the Department of Expenditure, Finance Ministry addressed to Home Secretary Ajay Bhalla on the issue of contributions or grants by individuals and institutions under Section 4(1)(b) of the Disaster Management Act, said it has no objection to the proposal.

SBI mobilises 13,212 kg gold through Gold Monetisation Scheme

  • State Bank of India (SBI) has mobilised 13,212 kg of household and institutional gold through the Gold Monetisation Scheme (GMS), according to the state-owned bank's annual report.

India's economic recovery more likely to be 'U' or 'W' shaped and not 'V': Centrum Institutional Research

  • India rightly went in for an early lockdown to counter Covid, thereby delaying the peak, but will have much slower economic recovery, it said.
  • "India will take a longer time to come out of this downturn. We expect FY20 demand to return only after 2 years i.e. in FY23 for many sectors," it added.
  • Stating that the rural economy is likely to recover faster than the urban economy, the brokerage said the forecast of a normal monsoon, its timely onset coupled with prospects of a bumper crop output along with minimum support price (MSP) hike and recently announced rural focussed programmes augur well for the rural economy.

Coronavirus doing almost double the debt damage as financial crash - Moody's

  • The coronavirus will push debt levels in the world's richest nations up by almost 20 percentage points on average this year, credit rating agency Moody's said on Monday, almost double the damage seen during the financial crash.
  • A new report by Moody's looked at 14 countries from the United States and Japan to Italy and Britain and assessed how coronavirus-induced economic slowdowns would scar their finances.
  • Italy, Japan and Britain are expected to suffer the biggest debt increases at around 25 percentage points of their respective GDPs, while the United States, France, Spain, Canada and New Zealand will all see theirs jump roughly 20 ppts.
  • Data from the UK last week showed public borrowing hitting a record high in May and a measure of public sector debt passing 100% of economic output.
  • A failure to bring debt levels back down would leave countries with weaker credit profiles more vulnerable to future economic or financial shocks, and sovereign credit rating downgrades, Moody's added.

  • With 67 new COVID-19 cases reported in Rajasthan on Monday, the tally of positive cases in the state has reached to 14,997, confirmed health department.
  • These confirmed cases were reported from Jaipur (28), Dholpur (10), Ajmer (6), Jhunjhunu (6), Kota (6), Dausa (5), Tonk (2) and Sirohi (1).

  • The Delhi High Court on Monday stayed the proceedings of an FIR registered against Sir Ganga Ram Hospital on the complaint of Delhi government for allegedly flouting the rules pertaining to COVID-19 tests.
  • A bench of Justice C Harishankar allowed the stay application filed by the hospital and said that prima facie there are reasons to stay the FIR.
  • The stay has been granted till the pendency of the main petition, which seeks the quashing of the FIR and Delhi government's June 3 order.

Delhi on high alert after reports of terrorists from J-K attempting to enter city

  • Delhi Police forces have been put on high alert after intelligence reports about the possibility of four to five terrorists from Jammu and Kashmir attempting to enter the national capital with an intention to carry out a terror attack.
  • Intelligence agencies have alerted police that the terrorists are likely to enter Delhi via road using a bus, car or taxi.

Karnataka may have up to 25,000 active cases by mid-August

  • Active coronavirus cases in Karnataka may reach around 25,000 by August 15 if the state maintains the current compounded daily growth rate of 4 per cent, a senior government official said on Monday while stressing the need to stick to social distancing and wearing masks to contain spread of the virus.
  • The projections are so sensitive that if the daily growth rate is at 3 per cent then active numbers can reach 17,000 but if it is at 4 per cent then the state could see around 25,000 cases in about 50-60 days, Munish Moudgil, chief of Karnataka COVID-19 War Room, said in a statement.

Dhok Defence Committee member injured in firing in J&K

  • Gopal Nath (35), a resident of village Duggi-Dandi, suffered injury in the right leg when unidentified gunmen opened fire at a dhok (mudhouse) in Jhompari Dal, 16 km from Bhaderwah town, around 11.30 pm on Sunday, Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Aadil Rishu said.
