Jaishankar to join Chinese, Russian ministers at RIC meet

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar will join his Chinese and Russian counterparts at a virtual conference of the Russia-India-China trilateral on Tuesday, against the backdrop of New Delhi's frayed ties with Beijing over the Galwan Valley clashes.
As the June 15 incident triggered fears of fresh confrontation between troops of India and China, Russia is learnt to have reached out to both the countries, urging them to resolve the border row through talks.

Defence Minister to seek equipment urgently from Russia

Amid heightened tensions with China, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh plans to request Russia to urgently supply spares and associated equipment to India for its fighter planes, submarines and battle tanks through air route instead of sea route using ships.
Singh will be in Russia on a three-day visit where he will meet top Russian political leadership and is expected to update them about the present situation on the Ladakh front.
The sources said the equipment was earlier supposed to be supplied to India through the sea route in ships but was stuck there for several months due to COVID-19.
During talks with the Russian leaders, the Defence Minister will also ask them to expedite the delivery of the S-400 air defence systems which are supposed to be delivered by the end of next year.

Traders' body CAIT on Monday burnt Chinese goods in Delhi's main market Karol Bagh to demonstrate their resentment and anger against the killing of 20 Indian soldiers in clashes with the Chinese troops in the Galwan Valley last week.
The protesting traders led by Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) Secretary General Praveen Khandelwal were briefly detained by the police and taken to the Karol Bagh Police Station.

China on Monday declined to comment on Union Minister and former Indian Army chief Gen (retd) V K Singh's remarks that more than 40 Chinese soldiers were killed in the Galwan Valley clash in eastern Ladakh, saying it has no information to release on the issue.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian, during a media briefing, reiterated that “China and India are in communication with each other to resolve the situation on the ground through diplomatic and military channels”.Asked about the remarks of Singh, he said: “I have no information to release on that.”

Chinese hacker groups could target Indian businesses

Indian businesses and media houses could be under attack by Chinese state sponsored hacker groups according to chatter uncovered on the dark web. In the last 10 days, there has been extended conversations in the Chinese hacking communities discussing ways to ‘teach India a lesson’, according to Cyfirma, a Singapore-headquartered cyber security firm. It said that the hackers expressed frustration with India, using statements like “this is one nation who doesn’t listen to us”.
According to Cyfirma, there are plans afoot to try and steal sensitive data, denial of service or deface websites or launching malicious phishing campaigns targeting Indian government websites and corporates in the telecommunications, pharma, smartphone and construction industries.

India-China meet underway

This is the second meeting between the two Corps Commanders after June 6 where they had agreed to disengage at multiple locations and India had asked them to go back to pre-May 4 military positions along the LAC.
The Chinese have not given any response to the Indian proposal and have not even shown any intent on the ground to withdraw its troops from rear positions where they have amassed over 10,000 troops.
India is also likely to discuss the change in rules of engagement on the LAC where the forces have been empowered to use firearms in extraordinary circumstances, the sources said.

Home Ministry reviews border infrastructure

Amid diplomatic and military talks with China, the Union home ministry held a review of the border infrastructure with officials from the Border Roads Organisation (BRO), Central Public Works Department (CPWD) and Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP). Officials from the Border Management Division at the MHA discussed the ongoing projects and the existing bottlenecks in Arunachal Pradesh, Ladakh and Sikkim, officials added.
While the BRO is responsible for laying 3,191 km of road at an expenditure of Rs 23,650 crore, the home ministry’s BM division has sanctioned 855.26 km for Rs 2777.08 crore to develop infrastructure in the border areas shared with China, Pakistan, Nepal and Bangladesh, as per officials.

Fistfight at 14,000 feet: Here's what happened at Galwan Valley

Indian troops put up a strong fight at the Galwan Valley on Monday night and the casualties took place after the Chinese side brought in aggressive reinforcements following a tiff over the removal of an illegal structure, according to accounts emerging from the debriefing of soldiers involved in the scuffle.
While the Army has not given any official account of the incident, sources aware of the developments said that most of the casualties look place at around 9 pm on Monday after the PLA descended in large numbers across the LAC to Patrol Point 14.
According to one version, the Chinese side too suffered substantial casualties, with 17 bodies being handed over to them the following day. As reported earlier, sources said that over 40 stretchers were spotted on the other side –– though it was not known if the soldiers were injured or dead.

'Batman, not bats': Jibe at China in Army's Bihar Regiment tribute

Hours after PM Narendra Modi saluted the valour of the Bihar Regiment in the Galwan Valley skirmish with Chinese troops, a video tweeted by the Army's Northern Command late Saturday to celebrate the unit's battle history appeared to take a dig at China with the legend: "Born to fight. They do what they do. They are not the bats. They are the Batman."
The 1-minute, 57-second clip begins with the line "Friends, Indians, countrymen, lend me your years" and harks back to the Kargil conflict 21 years ago before going on to illustrate how the Bihar Regiment has its name etched on every major milestone for the Army - 1857, 1948, 1965, 1971 and 1999.
The video makes no reference to Galwan Valley, where the 20 soldiers killed fighting the PLA were from the Bihar Regiment. Their story is told through pictures of three of the soldiers killed in action, including the 16th Battalion commander Col B Santosh Babu. The Batman tribute comes just before the voice-over ends with the Bihar Regiment's war cry, "Bajrang Bali Ki Jai", followed by a paean to the armed forces.
While there was no official word from the Army or the creator of the video, Maj Akhill Pratap, the comparison between "bats" and the caped crusader Batman had Twitter in a tizzy over the inferred China-coronavirus connection. Till 7.30pm on Sunday, the pinned tweet on the handle @NorthernComd.IA had received more than 11.4k likes and been shared 5.4k times.

India is determined to impose costs on Chinese troops if they attempt any further misadventure on the border, officials said on Sunday after defence minister Rajnath Singh reviewed operational readiness along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) with the military brass here. The armed forces have been given “full freedom” to respond in an “adequate and proportionate manner” to any hostile act in accordance with their judgement. “They have been told not to start a fight, but also not to hold back in the event of any ground intrusion or breach of airspace. The Army, Navy and IAF reported satisfactory levels of preparedness and high operational alertness along the LAC,” an official said.
