WB Governor urges CM to brief him on 'declining law and order' in state

  • West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankar on Thursday urged Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to brief him on the issue of the 'decline in law and order' in the state.
  • In his tweet, the Governor expressed concern over the alleged partisan of the state police against Opposition leaders.
  • "Given the enormity of decline in law and order @MamataOfficial have urged CM to urgently brief me. This as Political Leaders and opposition MPs and MLAs being virtually hunted out of public space by partisan police acting as political workers. This cannot be allowed in a democracy," he tweeted.

River Gandak in Bihar likely to cross Highest Flood Level of 64.1 metre: CWC

  • Amid the floods in Bihar, river Gandak at Dumariaghat in the Gopalganj district is likely to peak around 64.25 meters on the intervening night of Thursday and Friday, according to the Central Water Commission (CWC) on Thursday.
  • "River Gandak at Dumariaghat in the Gopalganj district of Bihar has crossed previous Highest Flood Level (HFL) of 64.1 meters and is flowing at 64.12 meters with a rising trend," said CWC.
  • CWC further said, "It is likely to peak around 64.25 meters during Thursday midnight and then slowly fall."

New Rajya Sabha members assigned to different committees

  • A day after administering the oath of office to the newly-elected Rajya Sabha members, Chairman Venkaiah Naidu on Thursday nominated them to the different committees in Parliament. A total of 45 of the 61 new members were administered oath o on Wednesday.
  • Among those who took the oath, Jyotiraditya Scindia and Thambi Durai were included in committee on HRD, Digvijaya Singh in Urban Development, while Sharad Pawar was nominated in the committee related to Defence.

AP reports 7,998 Covid-19 cases, highest single day spike

  • Andhra Pradesh reported 7,998 Covid-19 cases in a highest single-day spike so far to take the total to 72,711 cases, while suffering 61 deaths in a day to take the cumulative death toll to 884.
  • Over the last 24 hours, the state tested 58,052 samples, taking the total to 14,93,879 tests so far, the fourth-highest in India after Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh.
  • AP reported discharging 37,555 persons so far and saw 34,272 active cases by Thursday.

  • With the highest single-day spike of 45,720 cases, India's coronavirus count crossed 12 lakh mark on Thursday, while 1,129 new fatalities have been recorded in the country, according to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.
  • The total number of coronavirus cases stand at 12,38,635 including 4,26,167 active cases, 7,82,606 cured/discharged/migrated. The cumulative toll has reached 29,861 deaths.
  • Maharashtra has reported 3,47,502 cases, highest in the country followed by Tamil Nadu with 1,92,964 cases. Delhi coronavirus count has reached 1,26,323 cases.

FM Sitharaman holds second review meeting on CAPEX of CPSEs

  • Union Minister for Finance and Corporate Affairs Nirmala Sitharaman on Thursday held a video conference with Secretaries of the Ministries of Civil Aviation, and Steel, and the Railway Board Chairman, along with the CMDs of seven Central Public Sector Enterprises (CPSEs) belonging to these Ministries, to review the Capital Expenditure in this Financial Year (FY).
  • This was the second meeting in the ongoing series of review meetings that the Finance Minister was conducting with various stakeholders to accelerate the economic growth in the background of COVID-19 pandemic.

Maharashtra Cabinet postpones Mayor, Deputy Mayor elections

  • The Maharashtra Cabinet decided to postpone elections to the posts of Mayor and Deputy Mayor for another three months in view of the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • The elections were scheduled to be held before May 1 as per Municipal rules but due to COVID-19, a three-month extension was given on April 27.
  • The extension will be over on July 27, so another three months extension is given from July 27 onwards.

Two more ICC qualifying events postponed

  • The International Cricket Council (ICC) on Thursday announced the postponement of two further qualifying events due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
  • The ICC Men's Cricket World Cup League 2 series due to be hosted in Namibia in September - which forms part of the qualification for the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2023 - involving Namibia, Papua New Guinea and the United States has been postponed.
  • In addition, the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup Regional Qualifier Division 2 in Africa has been postponed. It was due to take place in Tanzania between 7 and 14 August with Botswana , Kenya , Mozambique , Rwanda , Sierra Leone and Tanzania all competing.

No employee of AirIndia will be laid off

  • Recent decisions of AirIndia Board regarding rationalization of staff cost were reviewed in a meeting at Ministry of Civil Aviation this evening. The meeting reiterated that unlike other carriers which have laid off large number of their employees, no employee of AirIndia will be laid off.
  • There has been no reduction in the Basic pay, DA and HRA of any category of employees. The rationalization of allowances had to be implemented on account of the difficult financial condition of the airline that were exacerbated by COVID-19.
  • Flying crew will be paid as per the actual number of hours flown. As domestic and international operations expand to reach pre-COVID levels and the financial position of Air India improves, the rationalization of allowances will be reviewed.

Assam CM inspects flood affected areas, meets people

  • Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Thursday inspected flood-affected areas and met the flood-hit people in Solmari and Rangia.
  • According to Assam Chief Minister's Office (CMO), Sonwal took stock of provisions and healthcare facilities at the Rangia TT College flood relief camp and interacted with the people stranded there.
  • He inspected an embankment damaged by flood at Janaram Chowka, Darrang and directed officials to expedite repair work on a war-footing.
  • As many as 89 died and 5,627,389 people have been affected across 30 districts in Assam due to the floods, said the Assam State Disaster Management Authority.
