Coronavirus Live Updates: India's coronavirus tally stands at 11,55,191 cases after 37,148 new infections were recorded in the last 24 hours, the Union Health Ministry said this morning, adding that the country recorded 587 deaths linked to the highly contagious since yesterday. More than 7.2 lakh patients have recovered so far. A total of 28,084 COVID-19 linked deaths have been recorded since the beginning of the pandemic. India is the third worst-hit country by the pandemic after the United States and Brazil.
Maharashtra continues to report the highest number of cases, followed by Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Gujarat and West Bengal.
Meanwhile, trials for the coronavirus vaccine developed at the Oxford University will begin in India as soon as a license is procured, said the Indian firm partnering the researchers in the UK. The vaccine AZD1222 had a favourable response in the first phase of clinical trials. It did not prompt any serious side effects and elicited antibody and T-cell immune responses, according to trial results published in The Lancet medical journal.

Sharjeel Imam tests positive for COVID-19 in Guwahati jail
Former JNU student Sharjeel Imam, who has been lodged at Guwahati Central Jail for allegedly delivering a seditious speech and abetting riots in Jamia Millia Islamia area in December last year, has tested positive for COVID-19.
"Delhi Police Special Cell had applied for his production warrant in Assam as he is lodged at Guwahati Central Jail and he was going to be presented before a Delhi Court on July 25 but will not be produced now," Delhi Police sources said.
Imam was arrested by the Delhi Police on January 28 from Bihar for allegedly delivering a seditious speech and abetting riots in Jamia Millia Islamia area in December last year.

COVID-19 patient escapes from UP hospital, brought back within hours
A novel coronavirus patient ran away from a hospital here only to be caught and brought back to the facility hours later, officials said on Tuesday. The patient from Khurja town had escaped from the hospital at VVIT College late Monday night, the officials said.
After getting information about it, police and health department teams started a search for the patient who was traced near a culvert in Khurja town and admitted back to the hospital, they said.
Chief Medical Officer Bhavtosh Sankhdhar said an investigation has been initiated to find out the reason behind the escape and negligence of security personnel at the hospital.

Delhi govt to consult experts after sero-prevalence study finds 23.48 pc affected with COVID-19
With 23.48 per cent of people found affected by COVID-19 in a sero-prevalence study in the city, the Delhi government will consult public health experts and epidemiologists to determine whether the future strategy needs to be changed or not, an official said on Tuesday.
The official said that the results of the study show that on an average, across Delhi, the prevalence of antibodies is 23.48 per cent in the population.
This captures the state of recovery from COVID-19 infection in mid-June, the official said.
"We will consult public health experts and epidemiologists to determine if the future course of Delhi''s strategy against COVID-19 should change in light of these survey results or not," the official also said.

Coronavirus update: Mumbai reports 995 new cases; 62 die, 905 recover
Mumbai's COVID-19 tally rose to 1,03,262 on Tuesday with the addition of 995 new cases, while the death count increased to 5,814 after 62 more patients died due to the infection, the city civic body said.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said the number of recovered patients reached 73,555 after 905 more patients were discharged from hospitals in the past 24 hours.
The civic body said currently the city has 23,893 active COVID-19 cases, PTI reported.

Coronavirus news: 9 more COVID-19 deaths in Haryana, 604 fresh cases
Nine more people died due to COVID-19 in Haryana on Tuesday, taking the state's death count to 364, while 604 fresh infections pushed its case count to 27,462, according to a state health department bulletin.
Of the latest fatalities, two each were reported from Faridabad, Rohtak and Karnal districts, and one each from Jhajjar, Palwal and Panipat districts, the department's daily bulletin stated.
The fresh cases were reported from 10 districts, PTI reported.

Coronavirus news: Plasma therapy begins in Odisha's Ganjam district
After encouraging results from plasma therapy in Bhubaneswar and Cuttack, the Odisha government on Tuesday started administering it on critically ill COVID-19 patients in Ganjam district, which accounted for 57 per cent of the total fatalities in the state, an official said.
Ganjam is the worst affected district in the state with 225 fresh novel coronavirus cases on Tuesday, pushing the tally to 5,991, PTI reported.

Coronavirus news: 210 fresh COVID-19 cases in Uttarakhand
Uttarakhand's COVID-19 tally rose to 4,849 on Tuesday with 210 more people testing positive, according to a state health department bulletin.
Dehradun district reported a maximum of 65 new COVID-19 cases, followed by Haridwar (52), Udham Singh Nagar (34), Tehri (21), Uttarkashi (16), Nainital (15), Almora (5) and Champawat (2), the bulletin said.
A total of 3,297 people have recovered from the infection and 38 have migrated out of the state. Uttarakhand has seen 55 deaths linked to the coronavirus so far, it said.
The number of active COVID-19 cases in the state stands at 1,459, PTI reported.

Coronavirus news: COVID-19 death count rises to 1,229 in UP
The coronavirus death count rose to 1,229 in Uttar Pradesh after the state reported 37 fatalities, a statement issued by the state government said on Tuesday.
With as many as 2,128 fresh COVID-19 cases, the state's infection tally reached 53,288.
The state government, however, put the tally of fresh cases at 2,151, PTI reported.

Delhi recorded 1,349 fresh COVID-19 cases on Tuesday, taking the tally in the city to over 1.25 lakh, while the death count mounted to 3,690, authorities said.
After reporting new cases in the range of 1,000 to 2,000 for nine consecutive days, fresh infections in the national capital had dipped to 954 on Monday.

Coronavirus news: COVID-19 tally in Mumbai's slum colony Dharavi rises to 2,502
The coronavirus tally in Mumbai's slum colony of Dharavi surpassed the 2,500-mark on Tuesday with the addition of 10 new cases, the city civic body said.
According to a senior BMC (Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation) official, the tally of COVID-19 cases in the slum -dominated area rose to 2,502 with 10 new infections.
He said Dharavi now has 151 active COVID-19 cases, while the number of recovered patients stood at 2,101.
The civic body has, however, stopped sharing figures of COVID-19 deaths, if any, in Dharavi since last month, PTI reported.

West Bengal will remain in lockdown on July 23, July 25 and July 29 from 6 am to 10 pm each day in the view of coronavirus outbreak, according to an order by the state government.

Coronavirus news: People are more likely to contract COVID-19 at home, study finds
South Korean epidemiologists have found that people were more likely to contract the new coronavirus from members of their own households than from contacts outside the home.
A study published in the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on July 16 looked in detail at 5,706 "index patients" who had tested positive for the coronavirus and more than 59,000 people who came into contact with them.
The findings showed just two out of 100 infected people had caught the virus from non-household contacts, while one in 10 had contracted the disease from their own families, Reuters reported.

Coronavirus news: RIMS attendant among 14 new coronavirus cases in Manipur
An attendant of Department of Respiratory Medicine, RIMS was among 14 people who tested positive for COVID-19 in the last 24 hours in Manipur, officials said.
According to a press release issued by RIMS Medical Superintendent Prof Ch Arunkumar Singh, the attendant had visited the Respiratory Medicine OPD, Respiratory Medicine Ward, ECG Room in OPD block, Radio-Diagnosis Department, Respiratory Medicine Department, and Plastic Surgery Department.
Mr Singh said that RIMS OPD block and all the departments/wards which the attendant visited have been closed for one week with immediate effect. However, emergency services would not be affected, ANI reported.

Russia is considering cutting spending on the military as low oil prices and the coronavirus crisis have pummelled its economy, a document published by the finance ministry shows.
The ministry has proposed the government cut state spending on the military by 5% between 2021 and 2023. The proposal, published on Monday, also includes budget spending cuts of 10% for the court system, the servicing of Russia's debt and wages for civil servants.
Russia, which flexed its military muscle with its 2014 annexation of Crimea from Ukraine and intervention in the Syrian conflict, dropped out of the list of the top five biggest military spenders in 2018 after its spending fell 3.5%, Reuters reported.

Coronavirus news: COVID-19 deaths per million population in India among lowest in world, says Health Ministry
The number of COVID-19 deaths per million population in India continues to be among the lowest in the world, Rajesh Bhushan, Officer on Special Duty (OSD), Health Ministry said on Tuesday.
"COVID-19 cases per million population in India is 837 which is the lowest in the world. Some countries are reporting 12-13 times cases per million population as compared to India. If we see death rate according to per million population, it is 20.4 which is among the lowest in the world. Some countries are recording 21-33 times of deaths per million," Bhushan said at a press conference.
He said that 30 states and union territories have a positivity rate lower than India average, ANI reported.

"Yesterday, 954 new cases were reported in Delhi. So far, the total number of 1,23,747 cases have been reported in the city. However, 1,784 people recovered from COVID-19 yesterday, which was a lot more than the number of new cases," the Minister told reporters.

COVID-19 patient escapes from UP hospital, brought back within hours
A novel coronavirus patient ran away from a hospital here only to be caught and brought back to the facility hours later, officials said on Tuesday. The patient from Khurja town had escaped from the hospital at VVIT College late Monday night, the officials said.
After getting information about it, police and health department teams started a search for the patient who was traced near a culvert in Khurja town and admitted back to the hospital, they said.
Chief Medical Officer Bhavtosh Sankhdhar said an investigation has been initiated to find out the reason behind the escape and negligence of security personnel at the hospital.

Delhi govt to consult experts after sero-prevalence study finds 23.48 pc affected with COVID-19
With 23.48 per cent of people found affected by COVID-19 in a sero-prevalence study in the city, the Delhi government will consult public health experts and epidemiologists to determine whether the future strategy needs to be changed or not, an official said on Tuesday.
The official said that the results of the study show that on an average, across Delhi, the prevalence of antibodies is 23.48 per cent in the population.
This captures the state of recovery from COVID-19 infection in mid-June, the official said.
"We will consult public health experts and epidemiologists to determine if the future course of Delhi''s strategy against COVID-19 should change in light of these survey results or not," the official also said.

Coronavirus update: Mumbai reports 995 new cases; 62 die, 905 recover
Mumbai's COVID-19 tally rose to 1,03,262 on Tuesday with the addition of 995 new cases, while the death count increased to 5,814 after 62 more patients died due to the infection, the city civic body said.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said the number of recovered patients reached 73,555 after 905 more patients were discharged from hospitals in the past 24 hours.
The civic body said currently the city has 23,893 active COVID-19 cases, PTI reported.

Coronavirus news: 9 more COVID-19 deaths in Haryana, 604 fresh cases
Nine more people died due to COVID-19 in Haryana on Tuesday, taking the state's death count to 364, while 604 fresh infections pushed its case count to 27,462, according to a state health department bulletin.
Of the latest fatalities, two each were reported from Faridabad, Rohtak and Karnal districts, and one each from Jhajjar, Palwal and Panipat districts, the department's daily bulletin stated.
The fresh cases were reported from 10 districts, PTI reported.

Coronavirus news: Plasma therapy begins in Odisha's Ganjam district
After encouraging results from plasma therapy in Bhubaneswar and Cuttack, the Odisha government on Tuesday started administering it on critically ill COVID-19 patients in Ganjam district, which accounted for 57 per cent of the total fatalities in the state, an official said.
Ganjam is the worst affected district in the state with 225 fresh novel coronavirus cases on Tuesday, pushing the tally to 5,991, PTI reported.

Coronavirus news: 30 cops, 16 BSF personnel among over 380 fresh COVID cases in Punjab
As many as 381 more people, including 30 policemen and 16 BSF personnel, tested positive for COVID-19 in Punjab on Tuesday, taking the state's tally to 10,889, while the death count mounting to 263.
The two fatalities due to COVID 19 were reported in Ludhiana and Patiala, PTI reported.

Maharashtra's COVID-19 tally rose to 3,27,031 on Tuesday with the addition of 8,369 new cases, the state health department said.
With 246 new deaths in a day, the state's fatality count increased to 12,276, PTI reported.

Coronavirus news: 210 fresh COVID-19 cases in Uttarakhand
Uttarakhand's COVID-19 tally rose to 4,849 on Tuesday with 210 more people testing positive, according to a state health department bulletin.
Dehradun district reported a maximum of 65 new COVID-19 cases, followed by Haridwar (52), Udham Singh Nagar (34), Tehri (21), Uttarkashi (16), Nainital (15), Almora (5) and Champawat (2), the bulletin said.
A total of 3,297 people have recovered from the infection and 38 have migrated out of the state. Uttarakhand has seen 55 deaths linked to the coronavirus so far, it said.
The number of active COVID-19 cases in the state stands at 1,459, PTI reported.

Coronavirus news: COVID-19 death count rises to 1,229 in UP
The coronavirus death count rose to 1,229 in Uttar Pradesh after the state reported 37 fatalities, a statement issued by the state government said on Tuesday.
With as many as 2,128 fresh COVID-19 cases, the state's infection tally reached 53,288.
The state government, however, put the tally of fresh cases at 2,151, PTI reported.

Andhra Pradesh Governor Biswabhusan Harichandan on Tuesday advised the state health ministry officials to provide an online information system that can provide data on the availability of beds in various COVID-19-designated hospitals.

Delhi recorded 1,349 fresh COVID-19 cases on Tuesday, taking the tally in the city to over 1.25 lakh, while the death count mounted to 3,690, authorities said.
After reporting new cases in the range of 1,000 to 2,000 for nine consecutive days, fresh infections in the national capital had dipped to 954 on Monday.
Twenty-seven fatalities were recorded in the last 24 hours, according to a Delhi health department bulletin issued on Tuesday, PTI reported.

According to a senior BMC (Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation) official, the tally of COVID-19 cases in the slum -dominated area rose to 2,502 with 10 new infections.
He said Dharavi now has 151 active COVID-19 cases, while the number of recovered patients stood at 2,101.
The civic body has, however, stopped sharing figures of COVID-19 deaths, if any, in Dharavi since last month, PTI reported.
